{"id":1275,"date":"2011-05-09T18:02:14","date_gmt":"2011-05-10T01:02:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/reinhardkargl.com\/iBlog\/?p=1275"},"modified":"2011-05-09T18:07:33","modified_gmt":"2011-05-10T01:07:33","slug":"shepard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/reinhardkargl.com\/iBlog\/2011\/05\/09\/shepard\/","title":{"rendered":"Alan Shepard In Space!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>50 years ago this month, <a title=\"Alan Shepard\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alan_Shepard\" target=\"_blank\">Alan Shepard<\/a> became the first American to fly into space.<\/p>\n<p>Although the intensely celebrated accomplishment was technically much less challenging than that of Yuri Gagarin&#8217;s earlier flight, it was the event for which America had been waiting. (Gagarin&#8217;s flight orbited the Earth, while Shepard&#8217;s capsule stayed only on a 15-minute, ballistic trajectory).<\/p>\n<p>Shepard, a U.S. Navy aviator and test pilot, was one of America&#8217;s original 7 &#8220;Space Heores&#8221;.
