{"id":1593,"date":"2012-01-11T13:51:57","date_gmt":"2012-01-11T21:51:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/reinhardkargl.com\/iBlog\/?p=1593"},"modified":"2012-01-11T13:54:18","modified_gmt":"2012-01-11T21:54:18","slug":"journalists-toll-of-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/reinhardkargl.com\/iBlog\/2012\/01\/11\/journalists-toll-of-2011\/","title":{"rendered":"Journalist Toll Of 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Given the public uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa, the military campaigns in Afghanista and Pakistan, and the drug conflict in Mexico, last year was particularly bloody.\u00a0<a title=\"Reporters sans fronti\u00e8res\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reporters_sans_fronti%C3%A8res\">Reporters\u00a0sans\u00a0fronti\u00e8res<\/a> has released its annual tally.<\/p>\n<p>66 journalists and 2 assistants were killed in 2011, which is slightly more than in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>1,044 journalists were known to be arrested, which is almost double the number of 2010. The hotbeds were certainly the events of the &#8220;Arab Spring&#8221; during 2011. But reporters\u00a0were also arrested, summoned to court and interrogated in connection with the demonstrations in Greece, Belarus, Uganda, Chile and the Occupy Wall Street protests in the USA.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In some countries, bloggers have taken on a central role,&#8221; says Michael Rediske, the head of the German section of Reporters Without Borders.\u00a0&#8220;Especially when conventional media are strongly censored or international journalists are not allowed into the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But the organization warns that Internet activists reporting in blogs, on Twitter or via Facebook have increasingly attracted the scrutiny of authorities and of violent groups.
