Gen. Charles Duke (ret.) visits the command module of the Apollo 16 spacecraft.<sup data-fn=\"95f75a50-91cf-4360-ae5b-3630188d1dd2\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#95f75a50-91cf-4360-ae5b-3630188d1dd2\" id=\"95f75a50-91cf-4360-ae5b-3630188d1dd2-link\">1<\/a><\/sup> (Young passed away in 2018, and Mattingly in 2023).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The photos below show &#8220;Charlie&#8221; Duke as a U.S. Naval Academy midshipman in 1957<sup data-fn=\"b1d3a610-3d39-454a-aea7-504aab728b50\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#b1d3a610-3d39-454a-aea7-504aab728b50\" id=\"b1d3a610-3d39-454a-aea7-504aab728b50-link\">2<\/a><\/sup>, and (back row, third from left) as a student at the USAF Aerospace Research Pilot School class 64-C<sup data-fn=\"5a8dae22-5b3f-4289-8c38-bf41117344ae\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#5a8dae22-5b3f-4289-8c38-bf41117344ae\" id=\"5a8dae22-5b3f-4289-8c38-bf41117344ae-link\">3<\/a><\/sup>, which commenced in August 1964 at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
