{"id":367,"date":"2010-06-04T00:28:51","date_gmt":"2010-06-04T07:28:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/reinhardkargl.com\/iBlog\/?p=367"},"modified":"2010-06-04T00:34:59","modified_gmt":"2010-06-04T07:34:59","slug":"12-events-that-would-change-everything","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/reinhardkargl.com\/iBlog\/2010\/06\/04\/12-events-that-would-change-everything\/","title":{"rendered":"12 Events That Would Change Everything"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Someone at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\">Scientific American<\/a> had a magnificent idea: come up with a list of 12 plausible events with the biggest potential to shake up our world.<\/p>\n<p>It is not difficult to identify such monumental events in the past, but harder than it seems when we try to gauge the relative importance (and likelihood) of things to come.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what Scientific American came up with for an interactive web-only special:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1. Polar meltdown<br \/>\n2. The proof for additional dimensions<br \/>\n3. Proof for extraterrestrial life<br \/>\n4. An exchange of nuclear strikes<br \/>\n5. The creation of fully synthetic life<br \/>\n6. Superconducitvity at room temperature<br \/>\n7. \u00a0Machines demonstrating self-awareness<br \/>\n8. Cloning of a human<br \/>\n9. A really large earthquake along the Pacific Rim<br \/>\n10. Usable fusion reactors<br \/>\n11. A collision with a large asteroid<br \/>\n12. A deadly pandemic<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A great list! Except, I don&#8217;t think human cloning is a big deal. We already have nature&#8217;s way of producing genetically identical humans (identical twins). So perhaps I would replace No. 8 with any of the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2022 Ability to switch off the biological aging mechanism<br \/>\n\u2022 Construction of a bionic uterus; extra-corporal gestation<br \/>\n\u2022 A working theory uniting Relativity &amp; Quantum Mechanics<br \/>\n\u2022 Drugs which significantly decrease the need for sleep<br \/>\n\u2022 Fully reversible vasectomies and tubal ligations<br \/>\n\u2022 Ability to grow organs and tissues from stem cells<br \/>\n\u2022 Solid evidence for \/ against the life of Jesus Christ<br \/>\n\u2022 Technical applications for Quantum Entanglement<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now that I think about it, I&#8217;d like to expand the entire list!
